Window Garden

  1.Window Garden
  • A window garden is an indoor garden that grows food and plants inside small pots.
  • Window gardens are normally built vertically but they can be built horizontaly
  •  Most reasons are because of limited space outdoors for planting and you probably want fresh herbs everyday to cook.

2. Plants suitable for window garden
  • When planting plants in the window garden you have to have certain plants.
  • You cant have deep rooters.
  • You cant have tall growing plants.
  • And fruit bearing plants cannot have heavy fruit such as pumpkins, as they could be to heavy for the bottle or pot that you use.

3. Plants that we chose plant and why
  •  Thyme- Thyme doesn't grow that tall and doesn't root deep. It regrows every time you cut like green onions. Meaning we can harvest all year round without having to replant.
  •  Sage- sage is a leafy plant and like thyme we harvest all year without having to replant.
  • Chilies- Chilies is a fruit bearing plant and grows tall. But we have a solution for the tall plant as we will have sticks for the plant to twirl up.
  •  Creeping/Runner beans- The runner beans are also tall growing plants and we using the same idea as the chilies for the tallness.
  • Strawberries- Strawberries are bushy plants and can get very big but we will be able to control it as we will trim the stem and leaves.

4. Window Garden Designing

Window Garden Blog 3

Did our plants grow and was our choice of plants well suited for our window garden?

Yes our plants did grow well and the plants were well chosen because we chose different varieties of plants to plant in our window garden and our window garden design was well made, this along with sunlight and regular watering of the plants made the plants grow well.

Predict changes that you think will take place in your window garden and plants during the holidays:

The plants will continue to grow and our window garden might need some maintenance in order for it to remain good in shape. Someone will also need to come sometimes to water the plants.

What modifications have been made to the window garden since the building and instillation of it?

We have had to change the water system as it was not functioning properly, we saw that a few of the plants were a bit dry from lack of water, now though we have made a fully functional water system to water the plants equally.

Final comment on the project from each member of the group - what have you learnt about building and maintaining your own window garden?

Kimon: I have found this project very cool, interesting and important because later on in the future, we will have problems with producing food regarding to food security and agriculture systems as we know will not go on forever. This project to me has taught me how to produce my own food from just a little garden that you can construct and maintain yourself.

William: This project has been quite time consuming and hard however it was also rewarding and fun. I really enjoyed installing our window garden, creating something from scratch and even planting and watching our plants grow. I learnt a lot from this project about gardening like if you have too much water too deep and not draining it can/will kill the plant.
