Field Trip

The field trip was very interesting. The first station we learned about was the different types of soil and its processes. for the first type were wood chips which was called mulch its helps prevent the water evaporating. the second one was in the middle stage of turning into soil it was ashy and looked burnt. the third one was completed soil full of nutrients and we would have to stick our hands in the soil and the deeper you went the warmer it got to the point of the heat of a hot bath.

stage 2 we learnt about the importance of water and its special properties and we put holes in the bottles for filtration.

stage 3  we learnt about the difference type of farming and planting tips

after that we had finished learning about panting and watering system we learnt about the importance of bees and if the world lost all bees the human race would have 4 years to live.
We then learnt about the importance of soil and how we are running out of soil incredibly fast.

We then had lunch and after that got back to gardening, here are the steps:

1. We first had to level the ground and soil and put air into it

2. We then had to add more organic soil and had to mix it in

3. We then dug small holes in the soil for our bottles will small holes in and filled them up with water

4. After that we then panted our plants and putting wood chips around the plants

5. We put cardboard on the pants and cut holes in the cardboard so the plant could go through the cardboard stops the water from evaporating.

Now the plants are all good and we will visit them in a few days

Our group has finished our garden.

A close up of our garden     The bee hives

Nam placing card board over the soil to stop the water from evaporating

A picture of the group next to us

A picture before we planted we had to add soil and flatten the ground out

At the water station we had to poke holes in our bottles so when we dug them in the ground the water would go straight into the ground

                                The different stages of compost

                       The wood chipper

The board at the station of different types of planting

I really enjoyed putting my hand into the compost and feeling it’s warmth and it was interesting to learn how it was formed
I already knew recycling water was important
It was still cool to learn about new ways of recycling
This part was my second favourite as I really enjoyed creating a mini garden
We learned about companion planting which I knew was a thing I.e Tomatoes and Marigold.
However I didn’t realise the scope of it and that there are so many combinations of plants that grow well toghether
This one was my favourite as I am personally very interested in bees and it was cool to learn about specific honeys which is honey that is made from one type of plant such as roses.
Nam
What stood out for me in soil and composting was learning about compost do’s and don’ts where they taught us what organic material we should use for compost. What I enjoyed was putting my hand in the compost mound where it got hotter as you went deeper.

Water recycling is what I enjoyed at the water workshop,
they taught us how we can water our plants in a green way.
Plants and planting was my favourite because we got to apply all the knowledge that we learnt at the workshops to the mini garden we had to plant.
What I enjoyed in permaculture was learning about companion planting because we took the advice and teachings for our window garden
Pollination was interesting as I learnt about how important bees are in our life.
And that honey can taste different based on the flower pollen.

I loved doing the soil and the different stages I thought it was very interesting and informing the third stage was my favorite because when you stuck your hand in the middle it was so hot.
I thought it was so interesting of how much water you  save when transferring it straight into the roots it was incredibly smart.
This was also one of my favorite stations just for the way we use the cardboard and wood chips to actually keep the soil moist.
We learnt about the different plants that grow well with each other and I loved how much effort the metrics did for this station and how well tym and sag grow together
It was so amazing learning the importance of bees and how our species would go extinct without bees our human race rely on them and how fast we are actually killing them it was very cool learning about all of that.

I thought it was quite amazing how warm the compost was when I put my hand in it. I thought it was important to learn about the different soils because we can then decide which soil is best for our window garden.
It was important to me about how we had to use our water wisely because if our soil and plants got too little, they would go dry and if they got too much, they would get waterlogged.
To me, this was a good way to practice how to make a window garden because we did the whole process of planting and adding soil to create a mini garden, which helped.
I thought this was good because we could choose the different plants we could plant and plants that grow well together in our garden.
This was very interesting to learn how bees are a very important source as pollination and harvesting of plants, it’s quite sad how so many bees are dying, they are a very important source of food for us.

Human impact

Nam
Humans play a big role in agriculture and have huge impact on the earth. We create pollution that harm the plants and and water in rivers that flow into the ocean. I also learnt that we as humans affect animals with our pollution. Humans should stop polluting the earth or soon we are going to kill mother nature.

William

We genetically engineer plants which change can change or destroy an entire ecosystem.
There are a lot of impacts that humans can have including pollution and deforestation.

How we worked well as a group

Nam
we have worked well as

William

We worked well by sharing costs and the workload, i.e. each of us is responsible for a page
We also created a fair watering schedule so we take equal turns
